La imagen de un muro que se erige para evitar el tránsito de las personas, pero también el itinerario de un correcaminos en su ruta entre los Estados Unidos y México, le ha valido al fotógrafo Alejandro Prieto para alzarse con el título de fotógrafo de aves del año entre las más de 22.000 imágenes presentadas a la actual edición del certamen internacional de fotografía Bird Photographer of the Year 2021.

“La imagen de Prieto llamó inmediatamente la atención de los jueces. No es la típica fotografía de un pájaro, y la historia detrás de la imagen es muy fuerte”, explica Will Nicholls, fundador y director del certamen. “El correcaminos parece tan vulnerable frente al enorme muro fronterizo que domina el marco”, añade.

La barrera representa una amenaza real para la biodiversidad y una fragmentación a través de kilómetros y kilómetros de hábitat. Bloquea físicamente las rutas migratorias cruciales para animales como ovejas de cuerno largo, berrendos, oso negros, bisontes e incluso jaguares. “Un muro que cruza desiertos, montañas e incluso manglares”, explica Prieto. “No es solo desierto, y de hecho recorre un ecosistema tan diverso que a lo largo del mismo uno puede encontrarse con más de 1.500 especies de animales y plantas amenazadas”, continúa el autor de la instantánea. “He visto a muchos animales diferentes llegar a la pared antes de darse la vuelta y regresar”.
