The Swahili language or Kiswahili[5] is a Bantu language and the mother tongue of the Swahili people. It is spoken by various communities inhabiting the African Great Lakes region and other parts of Southeast Africa, including Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of Congo.[6] The closely related Comorian language, spoken in the Comoros Islands, is sometimes considered a Swahili dialect.
Although only around fifteen million people speak Swahili as their mother tongue,[7] it is used as a lingua franca in much of Southeast Africa. The total number of Swahili speakers exceeds 140 million.[8] Swahili serves as a national or official language of four nations: Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is also one of the official languages of the African Union.
Some Swahili vocabulary is derived from Arabic through contact with Arabic-speaking Muslim inhabitants of the Swahili Coast. It has also incorporated German,Portuguese, English, Hindi and French words into its vocabulary through contact with empire builders, traders and slavers during the past five centuries.
La mia estraneità all’inglese è dovuta al suono; inoltre c’era una mia parente acquisita, preveggente e brava negli affari, che ai tempi della scuola media ci ha regalato un vocabolario di inglese, dicendo che dovevamo assolutamente studiare questa lingua, che sarebbe diventata la più praticata. In casa nostra, per ragioni anche di parentele, c’era il mito della Francia e sarebbe stato un disonore non imparare la lingua della dolce Francia. Inoltre quella mia zia, che in seguito si doveva dimostrare molto magnanima verso noi nipoti acquisiti, non era molto simpatica alla mia famiglia. Pensando a chi alle superiori aveva scelto il francese e chi l’inglese, non si può non notare che i francofoni erano i poveretti, capitati al liceo quasi per sbaglio mentre gli anglofoni avevano parenti importanti. Questa constatazione mi rende ancora più simpatica la lingua dei nostri cugini ( parenti-serpenti). Da quando poi c’è la mania della lingua di Albione e ancora di più dell’americano, è insopportabile sentire tante parole, che hanno un preciso corrispondente italiano, essere pronunciate, magari malamente, dai politici che. cercano di far credere di essere passati da Oxford.
