Illustrations by Helga Aichinger for Noah and the Rainbow: An Ancient Story retold by Max Bolliger, trans. Clyde Robert Bulla (Crowell, 1972).
I discovered Helga Aichinger while putting together A Paper Zoo. I thought she might have been Ilse Aichinger‘s twin sister Helga, but this Helga appears to have been born in 1937 rather than 1921. She has illustrated numerous books. About five to ten of her books made it into English in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. I’m still digging them up. You can find library discards fairly easily.
Sadly, while I found many listings for Aichinger’s books online, I could find almost no information about her.
Here’s a publisher bio from one of her books:
Helga Aichinger is one of the most successful of the youngest generation of European artists. Born in Linz, Austria, she began her career as a student of calligraphy and other graphic arts at the local Academy of Art. Her works have been purchased by the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Stedlijk Museum in Amsterdam, and many other museums and private collectors in Europe and America. Mrs. Aichinger lives with her husband at the edge of a forest in Austria.
I love the Eastern-look of her illustrations of biblical themes, a style also used in Jonah and the Great Fish, a book I’ll feature soon (wait until you see the whale).
Some of Aichinger’s German-language books look phenomenal, and I’ll post about them as they arrive in the mail.
This post launches the “Forgotten Illustrators” series.
