The sessions shown here recorded in July 1961. The trio were playing at the London House in Chicago, and originally was released as four LP’s. The two included here, ‘The Trio’ and ‘The Sound of the Trio’, are widely considered to be the cream of the music from these sessions. Peterson himself was at the height of his powers, often taking off on long tunes that test the full range of his talents- powerful, but always swinging and never showing off. Thigpen’s drumming showcases his mix of rhythm and melodic invention which could have been a distraction were it not crucial to the overall groove.
